Pregnant and wondering if you should spray tan?

September 4th, 2012

Well the good news is its totally safe and ok to spray tan while you’re pregnant!!

I found this great article on baby med.  We tan a lot of  expecting mothers as well as a lot of new mothers too!

Great news for the “fake tan” lovers, if you want to add to your naturalpregnant “glow” then self-tanners are perfect. These also can help to increase your self-esteem by providing a health glow, especially during the spring and summer months.

spray tanning-during-pregnancy.jpgThe safer alternative to outdoor tanning is the spray or lotion self-tanners that are considered to be safe. Sunless tanners do not protect from the sun’s UV rays, and additional sunscreen should be used.

These products actually stain the skin rather than absorb into the bloodstream. The risks have not been scientifically tested, but the sugar and mineral based ingredients are an indication that there are little or no risks involved. With the increased concerns for skin cancer spray and lotion self-tanning products have become more popular as the safer tanning solution.

The salon spray on tanners are acceptable; as long as the salon provides protection for your eyes, nose, ears and mouth to prevent inhalation of the product. The DHA in salon sprays have not been completely tested; therefore the additional protection is needed. If the salon does not provide the needed protection, it is recommended that you receive the service elsewhere.

Sunless tanners use DHA (dihydroxyacetone) to temporarily color skin. DHA is a safe ingredient for skin. DHA is considered safe for pregnant women. One concern is whether the active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), is able to penetrate the skin. To err on the side of safety, it is suggested that expecting mothers wait until after the first trimester to use any type of self-tanners.

Don’t forget that if you…

1. Wear flip flops, your toes and the tops of your feet are at risk of damaging burns unless you add sunscreen or socks.

2.  Wear baseball caps, the tips of your ears are exposed to damaging UV rays.  Most people overlook applying sunscreen to the ears.

3.  Live in or near the mountians, altitude  exposes you to UV risk.  UV radiation from the sun increases about 4 to 5 percent for every 1,000 feet above sea level, the reason you sunburn faster when skiing or hiking in the mountains.

4.  Are a runner, cyclist, or swimmer, you will develop more atypical moles and skin lesions per mile you’ve put on.

5.  Have light colored eyes, consider yourself at high risk.  Blue, green or gray eyes are indicators that you are vulnerable to skin cancer since these often occur in people who have fair skin, lots of freckles and blonde or red hair.

6. Have a “healthy” tan, that tan is evidence of UV damage.  Remember, a “base tan” does not protect you from further damage.

7.  You smoke, the more likely you’ll develop non-melanoma skin cancer.  After 20 years of puffing, your odds of skin cancer double compared to nonsmokers.

8.  You’ve used a tanning bed, you are 69 percent more likely to develop basal skin cancer before age 40.  Use a tanning bed once a month under age 35, and your risk of getting melanoma skyrockets to 75 percent.

9. Have had many sunburns as a kid or teen, a history of sunburn is one of the most common causes of skin cancer.  Your risk doubles if you’ve had more than five sunburns at any point in your life.

Why is Sinless Sun different?

July 23rd, 2012

Dangers of tanning beds, according to National Skin Care Foundation:

  • Indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors.
  • People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.
  • Ten minutes in a sunbed matches the cancer-causing effects of 10 minutes in the Mediterranean summer sun.
  • Nearly 30 million people tan indoors in the U.S. every year; 2.3 million of them are teens.
  • Tanners who visit a salon just four times a year increase their risk of melanoma by 11 percent, and their risk of the non-melanoma skin cancers basal and squamous cell carcinoma by 15 percent.

Currently California, New Jersey and New York and North Carolina are leading the way in legislation to ban tanning beds. At first the ban would just be for minors, however if passed the bill, could to be pushed to the rest of the country.

Many countries have already done this — England and Wales banned teen indoor tanning, Brazil banned tanning beds for cosmetic purposes for the entire population. Australia, Nova Scotia and Canada are the in the process of banning tanning beds as well.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s position on DHA

There is no clear evidence that DHA is harmful to humans if applied topically and used as directed. Some DHA’s contain lead and mercury which are dangerous if inhaled however, Sinless Sun solution does not contain any of those harmful ingredients, but instead only naturally derived ingredients with the highest organic content possible. Our DHA comes from sugar beets.  Furthermore, there are no FDA human medical studies that give us reason to believe that DHA penetrates the skin, or that it can cause any skin or lung damage.

For people who feel the need for bronzed skin, the Skin Cancer Foundation maintains that spray tanning and self-tanners are still safer than UV radiation exposure obtained outdoors or in a tanning bed.

Why is Sinless Sun different and safe?

Sinless Sun’s studio has a one of a kind design that is unlike any other spray tanning salon out there.  We have an exhaust filter ventilation system in each tanning room that pulls the excess tan up and out while a client is being spray tanned.

The concentration of DHA in traditional spray booths is at least 25% and use 4oz or more solution to tan you.  We use between 5%-10%, but mostly 5%-6.5%.  Booths like Mystic and Versa douse the client with 4oz or more solution and who knows what it contains.  At Sinless Sun we use less than 1.5-2oz of solution during the tanning session.  With our airbrush tan, the Sinless Sun client actually inhales almost no product.

What’s the difference in our solution?  Sinless Sun’s only uses the highest quality organic ingredients available.  We use Eco-Certified Organic DHA derived from sugar beets and only the purest ingredients like organic aloe, firming and anti-aging bio-peptides, hyaluronic acid, and anti-oxidants from green and white tea to add skincare benefits to our solution.  We also use purified water in our solutions so that all impurities have been removed through the purification process.  Lastly our spray tans are only done by a technician in our one-of- a- kind ventilated room that pulls any excess up and out of the room immediately, not in a booth or by a machine.  Thus the solution is applied in a methodical way keeping it out of the client’s eyes, nose and mouth.
